Taiping and North Perak

About

North Perak consist of Larut, Matang, Kerian and Selama district. Most of the population is concentrate near Taiping area. Taiping is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh. It was also the capital of Perak from 1876 to 1937 before replaced by Ipoh. Taiping also known as the wettest town in Malaysia.

Kuala Sepetang, formerly known as Port Weld is a fishing village and the main getway of chinese fishing community of Kuala Sanggar. During the heyday of tin mining, the first railway station in Malaya was built from Taiping to Port Weld in 1885.
Kuala Gula, another fishing village in this area is well known as a bird santuary. Every year during the migration season, September til March, estimated more than 100,000 birds, 50 different species were here.

Taiping is located at north of Ipoh, about 74km in distance and about 275km from Kuala Lumpur. It coordinates is 4 51'N 100 44'E. [click here for map]

How to get there

Taiping can be reach by land, about 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, exiting Changkat Jering Interchange (Exit 146) and 1/2 hour from Butterworth, Penang, exiting Kamunting/Taiping Interchange (Exit 148). While those from Ipoh, you can exit Changkat Jering Interchange (Exit 146). It takes about 1/2 hour.
